This type of containers may be called a combination of hydroponic method of gardening which lies in that the roots of plants grow in nutritionally enriched water and of standard container gardening. Such containers with self-watering system make it possible to maintain moisture and nutrients, and allow not paying any attention to the plants for several days.

The simplest embodiment of this method is placement of saucer with water under the pot with the plant. In such a situation, the excess water is absorbed in the culture medium or in the longest roots.
